Q.   WHY DO THE OFFICERS MAKE SO MANY TRAFFIC STOPS?

ANSWER-  YOU, THE RESIDENTS OF NEW VIENNA, HAVE INFORMED US THAT YOU HAVE NOTICED SEVERAL PEOPLE,  SPEED, RUN STOP SIGNS, AND STOP LIGHTS. IN AN ORDER TO MAKE THE STREETS SAFER FOR KIDS TO CROSS THE STREET AND RIDE THEIR BIKES,  THE OFFICERS MONITOR THE HIGH TRAFFIC AREA. MOST OF THE VEHICLES STOPPED FOR SPEEDING ARE TRAVELING 15 MILES FASTER THAN THE POSTED LIMIT.  ANOTHER REASON YOU SEE THE OFFICERS ON TRAFFIC STOPS ARE DUE TO DRUGS OR ARREST WARRANTS.

Q. WHAT DO THE OFFICERS SEARCH VEHICLES?

ANSWER- IN ORDER TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION BEST, I INVITE YOU TO COME INTO THE POLICE STATION OFFICE. THE CHIEF HAS PUT ON DISPLAY THE ARTICLES RECOVERED FROM TRAFFIC STOPS IN THE LAST YEAR. THESE ITEMS INCLUDE METH, KNIFES, GUNS, DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRUGS, AND BRASS KNUCKLES. THESE ARE JUST A SMALL SAMPLE OF EVIDENCE TO SHOW THE PUBLIC WHAT IS ON THE STREET, WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND FAMILY.

Q. WHY WERE THERE TWO OFFICERS ON A TRAFFIC STOP?

ANSWER. ALTHOUGH RARE TO SEE TWO OFFICERS ON A TRAFFIC STOP IN THE VILLAGE, IT IS DONE FOR SAFETY REASONS. TRAFFIC STOPS ARE ONE OF THE TOP REASONS OFFICERS ARE KILLED OR INJURED IN THE LINE OF DUTY.  THIS IS NOT TO SAY IF YOU SEE TWO OFFICERS ON A STOP THAT THE OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE WERE DANGEROUS, BUT THE TRAFFIC OF THE ROADWAY WAS  UNSAFE AND HAZARDOUS.

Q.  WHY DO OFFICERS "HIDE" BEHIND THE STOP SIGNS?

ANSWER- THEY ARE NOT HIDING. THEY ARE ACTUALLY SITING IN A VISIBLE SPOT, YET UN-NOTICED BECAUSE A DRIVER IS NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE TRAFFIC. IF A DRIVER STOPPED LONG ENOUGH AND LOOKED BOTH WAYS AT THE  STOP SIGN, THEY WOULD SEE THE CRUISER SITTING CLOSE TO THE ROAD MUCH LIKE A VEHICLE COMING TOWARDS THE SIGN.  REMEMBER, JUST BECAUSE YOU STOPPED AT THE SIGN, DOSEN'T MEAN THE OTHER DRIVERS ARE GOING TO DO THE SAME. INCLUDING CHILDREN ON BIKES.

 Q. WHY DOES THE POLICE DEPT SEEM TO NEVER HAVE ANYONE ON DUTY?

ANSWER-  DUE TO THE POLICE DEPT NOT HAVING A LEVY PASSED, WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY OFFICERS, SO THEY ARE ONLY PART TIME AND ARE ONLY REQUIRED TO WORK 24 HOURS A MONTH. HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK ONE DAY A WEEK, EVERY WEEK, FOR FREE AND DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING A PAID OFFICER ON A FULL TIME DEPARTMENT DO.

Q. WHY HAS THERE BEEN TWO OFFICERS ON DUTY ON MONDAYS AND NOT WEEKENDS?

ANSWER- THE DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY TRAINING  OFFICERS, AND MONDAY IS ACTUALLY ONE OF OUR BUSIEST DAYS. THE OFFICERS ALL HAVE A FULL TIME JOB, WHICH THEY WORK, AND ACTUALLY WORK AT THE POLICE STATION BECAUSE THEY ENJOY HELPING PEOPLE AND AGAIN, THEY DO THIS WITH OUT BEING PAID. THE CHIEF WORKS EVERY OTHER WEEKEND AND IS STILL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO IS  CERTIFIED TO BE A PEACE OFFICER TO WORK THE WEEKENDS FOR FREE.

Q.   What should I do if I want to file a complaint against an officer?

ANSWER.  You can submit your complaint by mail, in person, telephone or email.  Your complaint will be investigated immediately and impartially.  We prefer that the complaint be in writing, but we do honor anonymous complaints.

 Q. HOW DO I GIVE AN OFFICER A COMPLIMENT FOR A JOB WELL DONE?

ANSWER. Again you can submit it in phone or person. However, letters are preferred so the letter can go in his file. This also assists in giving the officer a medal if so deserved.

Q. What should I do if I get a traffic ticket?
ANSWER. The officer should have provided you with  the information of how to deal with your ticket or call the court.  If you still have questions, please call the court at 937-382-8985.   You can also get a wealth of information from the court website.

Q.  How do I apply to be a police officer with the New Vienna Police Department?

ANSWER.  The police department is always accepting applications for Auxiliary positions.  These positions are sworn police officer positions and officers have every authority and privilege as any other officer.  N.V.P.D. does not sponsor people through the police academy.  To be eligible for appointment, officers must have a current certification through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council and either a 2-year degree or a minimum of 3 years of documented police experience.   Officers are required to donate a minimum of 32 hours per month.  For further information, download an application packet here.
